The Covington Howler - January 21th, 2010

From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Covington Parents and Community,

Reminders/ Safety
Over the last two weeks, you may have noticed more adults/ teachers helping to supervise the departure of students at the end of the school day. Making sure all students are safe is a top priority at Covington. Here are a few reminders:

Parking Lot Safety
-Remember that when dropping your child off by car, pull up as far as you can next to the curb.
-If you are waiting for your child, be alert and move your car forward when cars in front of you pull out. This way, we avoid cars backing out into the street onto Covington.
-Also, please do not leave your vehicle while parked on the curb - we need you to be ready to pull forward.
-As always, courtesy and common sense by all our drivers is the way to go while in the parking lot.

After School Departure Policy
-Since we do not have paid personnel to supervise the playground after school, unless a child has a sponsored activity or meeting with a teacher after school, all students are to leave campus at the end of the school day.
-Students may use the playground after school with organized club activities or with direct parental supervision only! Thank you so much for your ongoing support and help in making Covington a great place for children, students, parents and our community!

Students and their parents are invited to "Stay and Play" after school from 2:45-3:30 on the playground. The ballroom will be open, and there will be plenty of fun games to join. Importantly, parents must stay with their children and be responsible for them during this time.

LAEF SURVEY

Los Altos Educational Foundation is conducting a parent survey Wednesday, January 20th through Wednesday, February 4th! The parent survey is very important because it is the only formal feedback mechanism through which parents from across all District schools can let LAEF know which educational enrichment programs they want LAEF to support. Using the results from this year's survey, the LAEF Grant-making Committee will determine LAEF's 2010-11 grant, and then work with District leadership to ensure that the programs parents value most are offered next year. Click here to access the survey.
Please participate in the survey and make sure your voice is heard!

BOOK DRIVE
Have you ever wanted to help another child in need? Well, here's your chance! Ryan Ratner and Rachel Wolff, two sixth graders at Covington, are holding a book drive from now until the February break. All you need to do is take old children's books you don't want anymore, bring them to us, and we will take them to students at Castro Elementary School in Mountain View. Many of these students are not as advantaged as our students at Covington, so it's up to US to help them out! So PLEASE, help us by bringing books that you don't want anymore. We will have a big box for collecting books in front of the office during school hours.
Thank you!
