From Erin Green, Principal
Dear Covington Parents and Community:
Schools
in the Los Altos School District have recently experienced an increase
in vandalism on our campuses. Specifically, Covington had our "lost and
found" items set on fire on top of a table this past weekend. Similar
vandalism and destruction of property has also been experienced in the
neighborhoods surrounding our schools. Recent incidents on school
campuses have included fires being set, school gardens being destroyed,
alcoholic beverage bottles being broken and graffiti sprayed on
buildings. Neighborhoods have experienced similar destruction of
property along with car break-ins and stolen property. We view our
schools as a valuable community resource needing to be protected for
the benefit of our students and our community.
In
an effort to protect our schools and neighborhoods, we ask that any
suspicious activity on any school campus be reported immediately to the
local law enforcement agency (Los Altos Police (650) 947-2770, Mountain
View Police (650) 903-6344, or Santa Clara County Sheriff (408)
868-6600). We also suggest you talk to your neighbors about any
suspicious behavior in your neighborhood.
By
working together as a community, we can minimize these incidents -
thereby protecting our sense of neighborhood and providing a safe
environment for our children.
PROJECT CORNERSTONE UPDATE
As
part of our implementation of the Cornerstone Program at Covington, we
held our first Parent workshop yesterday morning. Spaces are still
available, so if you are interested in joining, feel free to attend
next Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:30 am.
Many
of you have asked about the staff component of Project Cornerstone. On
Wednesday, February 10th, Linda Silvius will provide training for staff
members around building/ fostering the developmental assets on campus.
In March, 4th and 5th grade students will have the opportunity to
participate in an "Expect Respect' workshop, also around the
developmental assets.
Sincerely,
Erin S. Green

From Los Altos School District
INTRADISTRICT (OPEN ENROLLMENT) TRANSFERS
The
Los Altos School District has a policy of Open Enrollment that permits
students living within district boundaries to attend a school other
than their neighborhood school, subject to space availability. Requests
for an intradistrict transfer must be submitted to the District Office
by February 15. An intradistrict transfer approval in grades K-6 is in
effect for one school year. Intradistrict requests must be submitted
annually and approval will be based on space available at the requested
school. An intradistrict transfer approval in grade 7 will be in effect
for two years (appropriate forms will need to be completed each year).
The complete board policy can be found on the district's home page
under Board Policies and Administrative Regulations, policy number
5116.1. Intradistrict transfer request forms are available at the
District Office. Contact the Superintendent's Office at 947-1152 for
more information.
