We are in full swing with Project Cornerstone, a new program which we are piloting this spring. Country-wide surveys identified 41 assets that help children steer away from high-risk behavior and make good choices. Project Cornerstone aims to develop and maintain as many of these assets by helping to create a supportive community. For more information, please see:
http://www.projectcornerstone.org/index.htm or contact Emi at chuiishida@yahoo.com.
This Spring, we are implementing 3 programs offered by Project Cornerstone:
1) Parent study group (final meeting this Wednesday 3/10). This was a 6-week study group led by a Project Cornerstone consultant. Using a workbook and group discussions, parents reflected on how they acquired their own assets and how to help their child gain assets. Due to popular interest and word of mouth, we would like to organize another group this Fall.
2) Student Leadership Program: "Expect Respect." This is a 3-hour workshop for a diverse group of 4th and 5th graders, who will develop a plan of action to improve our Covington School climate. It will be held on March 19th from 11am-2:30pm. It will be led by a representative from Project Cornerstone and will be supervised by Kim Nero and Jill Croft, who will serve as advisors. We are looking for a few more parents volunteers to help with the break-out sessions. If you can help, please contact Emi at chuiishida@yahoo.com.
3) ABC Reader Program, where a parent reads a selected story focused on student respect, dealing with peer abuse, and building social skills. The parent volunteer leads a discussion related to the story topic. We will be bringing ABC Readers to all grades in the Fall, but only to the 4th grade this Spring. Elana Joffe, Lori Cox, Alene Baronian, Suzy Allison, Janet Miller, and Marita Caldecott will be our first ABC Readers. Thank you! ABC Reader Training class will be held on March 17th from 6:30pm-8pm.
