Interim Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Community,

PARENT SURVEY: On behalf of the School Site Council, we would like to thank the many Covington parents who took time to complete the 2010 Parent Survey. We had a great response, with more than two-thirds of our families taking part. Over the summer, a complete analysis of the responses will be made and all of your comments will be read. We appreciate your candid feedback and we look forward to using this information to create the best educational environment for our children.

COMMUNITY SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE: In conjunction with our "Living Classroom Project," several Los Altos School District schools also participate in the Mountain View/Los Altos Community Sustainable Agriculture program. Each week participants may purchase approximately one pound of fresh/seasonal and locally grown fruits and vegetables. If you are interested in learning more about this program that also supports the "Living Classroom Project," come by Covington School after school on Monday, June 7th and meet Scott Manning, Director of CSA Mt View/Los Altos.

GOOD NEWS! Last week we received great news. Class size in primary grades next year will remain at the same class size levels, as they are this year. School libraries will also remain open the same hours as this year. The reinstatement of these programs ensures our students will experience the exemplary program to which we have all become accustomed. All laid off teachers in the elementary schools have had their jobs reinstated. The funding to make this happen became available due to the generosity of our entire school community:
LAEF - set its fundraising goal to $2.35 million for 2010-11, an increase of $540,000 compared with 2009-10
PTA - collectively agreed to contribute $435,000 next year to offset the costs of classroom supplies and instructional materials
LASD Employees - agreed to take three unpaid furlough days saving the District $430,000 in salary

COVINGTON STAFF FOR 2010-2011: We are pleased to announce the Covington Staff for the coming school year:

KINDERGARTEN:                      Melissa Chan, Tara Harte, Christy McCracken

Mrs. Judy Jorgenson, Second Grade Teacher, is retiring at this end of this year with sixteen years in the profession. Mrs. Jorgenson taught 6th grade at Bullis School prior to coming to Covington School. While at Covington, Mrs. Jorgenson has taught both first and second grades. Mrs. Jorgenson also taught for six years in the La Entrada District in Menlo Park. Judy and her husband look forward to long, leisurely mornings sipping coffee and reading the newspaper and enjoying time with grandchildren.

Ms. Lori Loftus, Sixth Grade Teacher, has accepted a position at Santa Rita School and she will be teaching second grade there next year.

Our thanks to both Mrs. Jorgenson and Ms. Loftus for the time and commitment they have given to our children, and we wish them well as they begin new chapters in their lives!

MS. GREEN: Please join me in welcoming back your principal, Ms. Erin Green. Erin plans to return to Covington School on Monday, June 7th. I have thoroughly enjoyed "filling in" for Erin, and I appreciate the wonderful environment that Erin and the entire staff have developed at Covington School. It was a pleasure to spend time here!

HAVE AND SAFE AND RESTFUL SUMMER!

LAEF

We Saved Class Sizes and Programs. Please Donate Today.

We believe the greatest gift we can give our children is a world class education, and we believe it's attainable in our Los Altos School District. LAEF just announced its $2.35 million fundraising goal for 2010-11 and we're accepting donations to reach it.

LAEF heard you loud and clear: parents across the district didn't want larger classes and program cuts, so LAEF increased its pledge to the district for next year by $540,000 to avoid staff reductions.

Now we need your donations. Start early and spread your donation throughout the year.
For the first time in four years our suggested donation has gone up: $100/month/child or an annual donation of $1,000. Please donate today, don't wait until Back to School. Some families donate more than the suggested amount, some donate less, but we strive for 100% participation from all families in the district because every child in the district benefits from LAEF's grant. Please give generously in whatever amount is right for your budget. www.laefonline.org

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members:

COVINGTON PARENT SURVEY!
Starting today, parents are invited to complete the 2010 Covington Parent Survey, available online by clicking here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2010covingtonparentsurvey
This is your opportunity to share your thoughts on a wide range of issues: academics, teacher-parent communication, homework, and much more!

Our School Site Council, comprised of parent, teacher and staff representatives, put this survey together to help assess Covington's strengths and identify opportunities for improvement. We'll use the information collected to help us plan and set goals for the 2010-2011 school year. Your input and feedback is valuable to our school and me; we hope to hear from each and every family at Covington. Thanks, in advance, for your time.

CELEBRATIONS
2010 Margaret Thompson Historical Essay Contest Awards
Please join me in congratulating two sixth grade boys who are recipients of this special writing award! Jarod Kong received 3rd place and Alex Baer received the first place award! Congratulations to Jarod and Alex; Covington students are stars!

2010-2011 YARD SUPERVISORS NEEDED!

We are looking for 3-4 people per day to supervise from 12:00-12:40pm. This is a paid position. We are open to creative scheduling, so if you are able and interested in doing 1-5 days per week, please let me know!

OPEN HOUSE
Open House is next Thursday May 20th 6:30-7:30 pm. This is a great opportunity for students to share some of their accomplishments from the school year with family and friends. Students are expected to be tour guides and stay with their family for the evening. We look forward to seeing you all then!

Sincerely,

Erin S. Green

MEDICATION RECALL:
Does your child have medications at school? There is a recall on some children's liquid medications, which includes some types Benadryl, Zyrtec, Tylenol and Motrin. If you child has these medications at school, please contact the District Nurse: nurses@lasdschools.org to find out if your medication needs to be replaced. The school staff cannot administer medication that is part of this recall, so it is important to have a replacement medication at school as soon as possible. May 17 - 21 is Teacher Appreciation Week!

They will arrange them in vases and present them to the teachers. You can see these beautiful bouquets in the classrooms at Open House Night on May 20!
Thursday, May 20: A "pick-me-up" of your choice - a piece of fruit, tea bag, student/teacher photo, a hand-made item

Dear Parents and Community,

STAR testing was a success this week at Covington! We had an almost perfect attendance rate this week, so thank you for your assistance in that! Make-ups will be going on next week, so if you are on campus in the mornings next week, those will be going on in a few of our classrooms. Thank you to all of you who helped to pass out snacks at the morning recess each day; students appreciated the snacks greatly.

On another positive note, Covington will be honored at the Annual Project Cornerstone Volunteer Appreciation Event on May 27th! We received the "Principal's Lunch Box Award," which basically says, "Thanks for packing your lunch and taking Cornerstone with you!" Almond School will also be honored for this award that day.

Don't forget, the Multicultural Festival/ Fair will be going on tomorrow night here beginning at 5 pm. I hope to see you all there!

Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,

Erin S. Green

Volunteer Opportunities

PTA HELP WANTED FOR THE 2010-2011 SCHOOL YEAR. As some of the Hot Lunch Committee Chairs are moving on to other schools next year, we are looking for people to help take over. Many hands make light work and more fun in these rewarding PTA committee positions. Please consider any of the following positions:

Vendor Chair - Plan lunch item choices working with local restaurants to coordinate orders and deliveries.

Order/Database Chair - Using Excel spreadsheets and the district's Filemaker database program work on planning the meal pricing and maintain order data.

Volunteer Chair - Recruit and coordinate volunteers for serving daily lunches.

These positions can be shared and most of the hours are flexible.
Hot Lunch serves multiple needs for the Covington community. While making delicious daily lunches available to the students, we are able to raise much needed funds for the PTA. If you are interested in helping out, please contact any of us. We are happy to answer any questions.

Thanks to your generous donations, we've managed once again to subsidize district revenues to save teachers, staff and programs that would otherwise be cut. Let's celebrate our unbroken record of local funding and local control over our children's education. LAEF's support for teachers and programs next year and beyond is limited only by our generosity. The Covington Howler - April 29th, 2010 http://www.covingtonschool.org/200910/announcements/20100429-001630.html
From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Parents and Community,

JUNIOR OLYMPICS

What a great event last weekend! Thank you again to our PTA Junior Olympics event chairs, Kathleen Vitakis, Rachel Botsford and Terese Blockus, as well as all of the grade level reps: Vahe Baronian & Ty Levine (4th grade) Linda Baxley & Peggy McGrath (5th Grade) Darcy Ratner & Sherri Glein (6th Grade) who assisted and put in countless hours planning and supporting this superior student event.  I know many more people helped to make this happen; please know you are appreciated!

Since this was my first Junior Olympics in Los Altos, I had no idea what to expect, and what a great day I had!  Our students were so positive, spirited and they definitely stood out (and not just from wearing bright orange)! I was so impressed with our students' attitudes and appreciated how they supported one another throughout the day!

I have limited results from the day, however I do know that each 4th grade Girl Relay teams took first place!  The events/ results will be posted on our website at a later date.  A highlight of the day, our Coyote had a strong showing in the Mascot event; even Coyote participated and attempted to achieve his personal best!  Finally, a big thank you to Mr. Heeb and his team for his hard work and dedication to our community!

Congratulations are in order! The Federated Woman's Club of Los Altos sponsored its 17th Annual Student Art Contest in March. The 56 entrants from the Los Altos School District received participation certificates. In addition for being recognized as participants, two Covington students placed first in first and fifth grade.  Jack Dragoli, first grader, and Anisha Palasamudrum, fifth grader, were both awarded a $100 Savings Bond. Congratulations to our stars; they were recognized at our flag salute assembly on Monday!

STAR TESTING MAY 3rd - 7th
Our teachers have been preparing the children for STAR testing which begins May 3rd. As a school community, we view STAR testing as a tool to reflect on the positive achievements of our students, and to identify areas of instruction we may need to focus on. The tests are designed to measure students' attainment of grade level standards in language arts and mathematics in grades 2-6, and science in grade 5.

Here are a few suggestions to support your children during the testing process:

-Take care of the basics. See that your child gets a good night sleep the night before the test and eats a good breakfast.  The brain can't work if the stomach is empty!

-Keep your cool.  While tests have increasing importance, they are just one measure of student learning so try to keep the process in perspective.  Explain that the results may help your child, and the teacher, understand the areas where he or she might be especially strong or may have a need for improvement.

-Get to school on time. Testing will begin when school starts. Students arriving late will not be allowed to interrupt the testing process.

-No appointments please! Thank you ahead of time for you help arranging appointments outside of that week if at all possible!

Some good news does accompany the testing news; students will not have homework the week of May 3rd-7th.
Covington Coyotes rock!

Sincerely,

Erin S. Green

MEASURE A CAMPAIGN
Many of you have likely already heard that the MVLA Board of Trustees voted unanimously to place a bond measure on the ballot for the June 8, 2010 election to support the anticipated growth of our high schools by 900 students over the next 10 years. There is no increase in tax rates above the current levels. The bond is an extension of the current bond in place and will assure that all funds from the bond will remain in our local high schools. This bond is for the future growth of our high schools and will directly benefit the students currently attending Covington Elementary.
Put simply, this bond measure is for YOUR KIDS! WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FROM THE COVINGTON PTA TO MAKE PHONE CALLS on Thursday, May 27th from 6:30 pm to 8:45 pm.
-Our night is Thursday May 27th (other high school, junior high, elementary groups will have assigned nights as well!)
-You will be given a cell phone to make the calls at the Measure A headquarters, 1685 Plymouth Street, Mountain View (behind the Century Theaters)
-You will have a script and be trained so no past experience is required
-You will not be asking for money, you are educating and asking for support of Measure A
-Food will be provided!
Please let me know if you are willing to VOLUNTEER for this really important cause- I need committed volunteers by Friday, May 7. Thank you! Kate Evard klevard@pacbell.net 948-4573 _________________________________________________________________________________
