Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,

Thank you so much to our wonderful parent coordinators who put in so many hours organizing our Covington team: Kathleen Vitakis, Corrine Landphere and Julie Altinger. Thank you also to all the parents who contributed by coaching our relay teams, helping with training and volunteering in many other important jobs that keep the Junior Olympics running. We appreciate your support!

This year, we will have two separate concerts, our Primary Spring Sing and our 4-6 Grade Spring Concert: Our 4th-6th grade concert will showcase vocals, band and orchestra, on Monday, May 14th at 1:00pm. The K-3rd Spring Sing will take place on Thursday, May 31st at 8:45am. Both events will be held in our Multi! All parents are invited to both events!

Film Festival
This Friday at Egan is the Los Altos School District’s first Film Festival! Many of our students, both independently and with the help of staff, have entered films into the festival. Check out the link below; Mrs. Scatena, Mrs. Sitler and Mrs. Zaich have submitted some fabulous films! I hope to see you at Egan this Friday to celebrate our students’ fantastic and innovativework! All of the district entries on our Youtube channel here: http://tinyurl.com/lasdfilmfest (If you click on the feed tab, you can look at films by category). Enjoy!

2012-2013
I am currently in the process of working through staffing for the 2012-2013 school year. Each year the staff can experience some adjustments in teaching assignments due to postings within LASD, and other various reasons. I will share our staffing list with you as soon as I am able to do so.

At this time, our students are beginning to wonder who their teacher will be for the following year. How do we decide which class each student will be placed in? We seek to develop the best possible dynamics in EVERY classroom. This includes balancing classes by gender, personality types, socialneeds and cognitive skills. We want all students to have an equal opportunity to learn, be challenged and develop into their full potential. Teachers, administrators and specialists follow a systematic process to ensure each child is placed in the best possible learning environment for his/her success.

It is important for families to understand we cannot grant individual requests for teachers. If you feel your child has specific needs that we may not be aware of, you may stop by the office and compete a parent input form. Thank you in advance for not requesting a specific teacher by name. I appreciate your support and look forward to sharing our staffing assignments for the 2012-13 school year very soon.

Sincerely,
Erin S. Green
Principal

From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,

STAR Testing Next Week

During the week of April 30-May 4, our students in grades two through six will be participating in the State of California’s STAR testing. This battery of tests produces scores that the State uses to monitor the progress of its students. Covington consistently performs extremely well on these tests. While this is one very quantifiable measure of performance with regard to student success, I encourage you to look beyond the numbers. These tests give you a snapshot of your child’s performance at a singular point in time on one particular day. Keeping abreast of your child’s daily, weekly and monthly progress is also an equally important indicator of success.

Please be sure your child is in school each and every day during the week of testing. We ask that all medical, dental and other appointments be scheduled outside of school during the week of testing or during another week. Be sure he/she is well rested and well fed in order to ensure the best possible focus. I appreciate your staying involved in your child’s education – it’s truly one of the factors that make Covington school a very special place for children.

Homework Center News

Good news! Next week during STAR testing, students will not have homework! To provide consistency and stability for students, our Homework Club will continue to be open next week. Students will be able to bring books or something quiet to do if they would still like to attend Homework Club. Please also mark you calendars for Thursday, May 24th! That will be the last day of of our Homework Club this year. Thank you for picking your children up promptly at 3:45 each day! Thank you also to Ami Lutz, Jenny Portillo, Genie Sitler, Shannon Vassar, Amy Wyosnick, and Erin Zaich, our fabulous Homework Club teachers!

Get Up Stand Up-Project Cornerstone Recognition

Thanks to our PTA, we have new Upstander t-shirts for our peer-to-peer recognition program! Each week on Mondays and Fridays, students will be awarded with a t-shirt for being an “Ultimate Upstander.” Students are encouraged to nominate each other for going above and beyond and contributing to others and our school in a positive manner. It is our goal over the next year, that all students are awarded a t-shirt as a badge of honor for their achievements and accomplishments. I have met with the 6th grades and challenged each student to strive to earn a t-shirt prior to leaving Covington in just 30 days. I know they can do it! We encourage t-shirt recipients to wear them often to show school spirit and pride! Thank you to Stephanie Barada, our Project Cornerstone lead, for helping to innovate and facilitate this program!

Cornerstone Book For April

Speaking of Project Cornerstone, this month we are reading The OK Book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Tom Lichetenheld.

This book focuses on resilience. Resilience is an ability to bounce back, recover from adversity or return to your original form. We can help kids gain resilience by helping them develop these 7 building blocks: competence, confidence, support, positive values, contribution to others, coping strategies and personal power.

Amazing Author’s Tour!

Yesterday, our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students had the opportunity to participate in the Endangered Authors tour presented by Kepler’s. We were one of only a few schools in the entire Bay Area lucky to host this group. This was a game show-themed presentation that included trivia, comedy and interviews with the authors. Eight students who read one of the Author’s books in advance participated in a panel representing Covington in a mission to answer trivia questions about the books in order to rescue the authors from an evil game show host. The four authors visiting Covington were Adam Gidwitz (A Tale Dark & Grimm), EJ Altbacker (Shark Wars), C. Alexander London (Accidental Adventures), Jacqueline West (The Books of Elsewhere). Here are a few comments from our students:

“It was really cool to have 4 authors at once at our school and to learn more about them and their books. I was surprised that the author of An Accidental Adventure didn’t like to read when he was young. Most authors say they loved to read and write when they were a kid.”

“I love how the Holden A. Grudge was the one who got endangered and not the authors because he was trying to get theauthors endangered but it backfired on him. It was funny how he was never embarrassed when he got hurt, yet at the end when Holden A. Grudge’s diary was read, he got really embarrassed because he didn’t think his writing was as good as the other authors.”

A huge thank you to parent Sandy Chen and librarian Maureen Drobot for working to make this author event a success.

Junior Olympics

This coming Saturday, our 4th, 5th and 6th grade students will compete in our LASD Junior Olympics at Mountain View High School. Opening Ceremonies begin promptly at 9am!
Main Message: This Project Cornerstone book of the month focuses on building interpersonal relationships and the Social Competency asset category. It also shows how caring adults can help create opportunities for friendships to bloom, even when misconceptions, prejudice and fear are obstacles.

Best recipe for friendship: Get to know me!

At the beginning of the story, the narrator is teased, ridiculed and excluded by the new boy in the neighborhood, Jeremy. With the help of a supportive adult, the narrator becomes empowered to stand up to Jeremy’s verbal and relational bullying behaviors. Their misinformed perception of each other initially prevented them from becoming friends. Thanks to the special recipe for Enemy Pie (spending time together, getting to know each other, and discovering similar interests), their friendship blooms.

In this ABC lesson, each student created their own special recipe for friendship pie. Take a moment to ask your child to share with you the secret ingredients in their friendship pie! These secret ingredients are the friendship boosters that will help your child connect with others, find common ground, and build assets!

It is fun to practice friendship boosters and the tools your child has learned in the ABC lessons this year. These tools empower kids to choose how to react when social difficulties arise. With your help, your child will gain confidence and resilience that are essential for success in social situations. Your role as “#1 Asset Builder” will help your child bloom!

Please contact me, Stephanie Barada, at Stephanie.Barada@yahoo.com to join me as an ABC Cornerstone Volunteer for the 2011-12 school year!

From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,
I hope you all had a wonderful spring break; I have enjoyed hearing your children’s stories this week about how they spenttheir vacations. Students have been sharing out about their travels and family events. I have even heard multiple stories from many students about how amazed they were with the thunder storms last week. It is hard to believe we only have 33 days left of our school year!

Parent/Principal Coffee Tomorrow Morning
Please join us in the staff room tomorrow morning at 8:30am after the flag salute. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Alyssa Gallagher will be joining us to talk about the greatinitiatives going on in the Los Altos School District. I hope to see you there!

Covington Kinders Give Back!
Covington students are connected to the larger community and realize the value of giving back! Kindergarten student, Isamu Britt, had a birthday over the spring break and requested that in lieu of gifts, his friends make a donation to the Covington PTA. Isamu and his friends collectively contributed $1196.00 to our Covington PTA and $30.00 to LAEF. Many thanks to Isamu and his friends for their generosity and thoughtful gesture to help makeCovington an even better place for kids!

Thank you to Suzanne Kasso and Symantec for our New Native Plant Garden!
If you have had a moment to stop by our playground in the last week, you have had the opportunity to see our new Native Plant Garden. The garden was possible due to a $5000 grant through Symantec Corporation. Samscaping Landscaping Company of Mountain View donated a crew for a day to rototill the soil under and install the new pathways. Valley Crest Tree Company donated several large trees for the project, and 30 volunteers from Symantec along with several Covington families donated their time and sweat to install the retaining walls. The Native Plant Garden will be a wonderful place to conduct our Living Garden lessons in the future and the signage is already teaching students and parents about some of the plants in the garden. Thank you to Suzanne Kasso, Symantec, and everyone else involved for their time and generosity!

Oskar and the Last Straw!
Today our 1st-6th grade students had the pleasure of participating in a Theater Works Assembly titled “Oskar and the Last Straw.”

The play was about a boy, Oskar, who faces an overwhelming amount of schoolwork, extracurricular activities, social events, and pressure from all around him. As his backpack gets fuller and voices from the outside world get louder, Oskar can’t help but feel like he can’t handle it–any of it! What does a kid have to do to deal with stress, to take backcontrol, to be resilient? This high-energy show encouraged our students to embrace their personal power and to be optimistic about their futures. All students enjoyed this wonderful production! Thank you to Stephanie Barada, our Project Cornerstone Lead Parent, and Mariette Wharton, for working in conjunction with our PTA to provide this valuable life-learning opportunity for our students.

Some news from Erin Zaich
After two years here at Covington, sixth grade teacher Erin Zaich will be moving abroad. We have loved having Erin on our campus. She is a fantastic teacher and an amazing individual. Erin has provided leadership in so many areas on campus and inspired our sixth graders and our entire campus to be upstanding world citizens. While I am so sad to see Erin go, I wish her all the best in her next adventure. Erin wrote a few words to share with you all:

“It is with both great excitement and emotions of sadness, that I share with the amazing Covington community that my husband and I will be moving to South Korea at the end of July 2012. I will be teaching 5th grade at the Korea International School for two years. My husband and I have wanted to live abroad to expand and to appreciate the diverse world around us. For me, Covington has been and willalways be one of the most innovative, engaging, and exciting places to work. I feel I have grown so much as a teacher from my colleagues as well as from the students and ultimately the entire community. Please know I will miss this place a great deal and hope to keep in touch with many of you. Thank you for all the ways you have inspired me and guided me in my time at Covington. “ – Erin Zaich.

From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,

Outstanding Sixth Grade Projects

Our sixth graders have been hard at work producing projects, using technology and writing poetry amidst their many other regular school responsibilities. Over the last week and a half, I have had the pleasure of participating and observing in our students’ Poetry Café experience, where students shared their authentic writing in various forms. Students were so proud, genuine, creative and engaged. I especially enjoyed hearing students’ “I Am” poems, where they put a great deal of thought and effort into putting into words what defines them as an individual! We have some very reflective, communicative and talented students at Covington! Sixth graders also created some wonderful author presentations integrating technology tools. I had the pleasure of viewing several of the presentations and was so impressed with students’ knowledge, ideas and technology skills. Our students are going to grow up to be wonderful adults!

From Erin Green, Principal

Dear Covington Parents and Community Members,

LOOKING FORWARD TO APRIL EVENTS

We have had a busy and productive month of March. Next week we head into April and still have many events filling up our spring calendar including Spring Break, Junior Olympics and at the end of month, STAR testing. Speaking of STAR testing, please be sure not to schedule trips or appointments during the week of April 30th –May 4th. Children in grades 2-6 will be taking the annual STAR test during that week.

LASD FILM FESTIVAL

I’ve seen many students actively engaged in creating films for our LASD film festival. These films can be done as a class or independently. All of the projects must be original, student-created work. All LASD students, grade K through grade 8 are eligible to enter films. The deadline to submit films is next Friday, April 6. Winners will be chosen and notified by May 3. Student participants and winners will be recognized at the LASD Film Festival on May 4. For more information on submission guidelines please visit www.lasdfilmfestival.org

NEXT YEAR’S PLANS

By now everyone in grades K-5 has received a survey asking you about your family’s plans for next year. We sincerely hope to see all of you back next year. Regardless, it is important that we know your plans, so that we can begin to make our plans for the coming school year. Please return these forms to your child’s teacher no later than April 6th, 2012.

IMPORTANT REMINDER ABOUT FOOTWEAR

Everyone loves fashion. But the best choice of shoes for school & PE are athletic shoes. Many children come into the nurse’s office after falling on the playground when they are wearing UGG boots, Crocs or other non-supportive footwear. Pleaseencourage your children to wear proper footwear and save those knees and elbows from so many scrapes and bumps. This way, upper grade students will be prepared for Junior Olympics training!

I hope to see everyone at the Stay & Play Friday; have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Erin S. Green
