Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

Happy Friday! It has been a wonderful first full week at Covington! Our students have jumped right in, getting to know their teachers and classmates, learning new routines, and beginning to build the classroom communities that will support them throughout the year.

It was especially wonderful to see so many of you at our Back-to-School Night last night. Thank you for coming out to connect with your students' classroom teachers and learn more about the year ahead! Also, a shoutout to our Educational Partners for crafting such a special environment for your students- from our teachers' and staff's classroom instruction, to PTA's community building and volunteer support, to LAEF's support of specialized teachers, programs, and materials, to each of you for donating and getting involved- it's truly a community effort. We appreciate you!

Looking Ahead: Our Aspirations for the Year
As we begin a new school year, we are also beginning with big hopes and aspirations for our students. Across Covington and the Los Altos School District, we are continuing to ask ourselves an important question:

How can we intentionally design even better learning experiences for our students?
We believe that when we intentionally design better learning experiences, we create better outcomes for students. This means continually reflecting on what we do, being willing to try new ideas, and looking closely at what helps every child learn, grow, and thrive.

Whether we are refining instruction, strengthening systems, or exploring new ideas, our goal remains the same—to create learning experiences where students think deeply, collaborate meaningfully, solve authentic problems, and develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to thrive.

We want our students to do more than simply know the answers. We want them to be curious. To ask thoughtful questions. To persevere when something is challenging. To listen to different perspectives. To communicate their thinking. To make connections. To solve problems that matter. And, most importantly, to see themselves as capable learners who can make a difference in their classrooms, their communities, and the world around them.

This work takes all of us. Our teachers and staff bring expertise, creativity, and a deep commitment to knowing each child. Our students bring curiosity, questions, and their unique strengths and perspectives. And our families are essential partners in helping children develop the confidence and dispositions they need to become lifelong learners.

Sincerely,
Kate Schermerhorn
Principal- Covington Elementary

Office Reminders

Parent Resources: Our school website includes many parent resources and is a great source of information! Please take a few moments to check it out if you haven't already! Here is the link!
Cell phone/smartwatch policy: Please remind your child that any devices with connectivity (ie., phones, smartwatches) need to be turned off and kept in their backpacks during the school day. Watches without connectivity can be worn. If your child needs to contact you, they can do so from the office or their classroom with support from a staff member.

Volunteer Authorization Process: Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

  • An overview of the three volunteer levels
  • Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
  • Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
  • Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

A Note From LAEF

LAEF
Back to School Boys
The Back-to-School Boys thank you for listening to their debut performance of "Give to LAEF Today."

Some fans have requested the lyrics so they can sing along, so here they are:
*****
Public funds fall short
Can’t cover it all
So that's why we say
Give to LAEF today

We love our librarian
PE, art, music
CS too
LAEF makes it that way

Tell me why
There's always been a funding gap
Tell me why
We need your help to close that gap
Tell me why
We want to hear all of you say
Give to LAEF today
*****

Most importantly, the Back-to-School Boys need your help!  Please give to LAEF today to support our cherished staff and programs like our library, PE, art, music, CS support, and more!

Let's set our students up for a successful year. Learn more about what your gift makes possible.

A Note From PTA

Coming soon....Covington's Got Talent! It was such a big hit last year that we need to bring it back again! Covington's Got Talent is our school-wide talent show featuring the amazing talents of our Covington Coyotes. The show is open to any students at all grade levels interested in participating. Students will need to “audition” their act, commit to a couple of rehearsals, including the mandatory dress rehearsal before the big shows. There will be two shows, one for our Covington families and one for students only.
Covington's Got Talent in the Covington Multi
September 24th at 6:00 PM
September 25th at 1:00 PM (Students only)
A MANDATORY dress rehearsal for all performers will take place Friday, September 18, from 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Multi.
More details:
  • Any student can participate. Students are allowed to be in ONE act - either as an individual or as part of a group. Each act is limited to 2 minutes maximum.
  • The stage is not huge, so all group sizes should be a maximum of 10-12 students.
  • Anything goes! Playing a musical instrument, magic tricks, singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, acrobatics, juggling, etc. However, students must spend their allotted time on stage doing something. A “talent” is not just standing there.
  • Students will have access to use the sound system (for music), mic, piano, table, chairs, and stage lights. Any other props will need to be provided by the performer.
  • This is not a competition but a showcase of our talented Covington Coyotes.
  • “Auditions" are an opportunity for administration/staff/PTA Executive Board to review acts to ensure they are appropriate for Covington’s Got Talent. They have the right to provide feedback to student(s) and review again if needed to make sure all acts reflect our Coyote Way.

Please SIGN UP HERE or click on the link below. The submission cutoff date is September 2nd.

Hope to see you all on stage!

A Note From Art Docents

Become an Art Docent!

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.

New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
