Dear Covington Families,
Thank you for another wonderful week at Covington and a fantastic day today! I was surprised this morning at the Friday assembly with a super-stylish birthday hat, and it was so sweet to receive the students' warm wishes, hugs, and high-fives all day!
Around campus, it is exciting to see our students really beginning to dive into their learning and settle into the rhythms of a new school year. I have especially enjoyed seeing our new Bridges Math program in action. Students are already engaging in rich conversations about numbers, shapes, estimation, and measurement—and I am so excited to see where this learning takes them.
We also had an amazing Rally Day! Our educational foundation, LAEF (Los Altos Educational Foundation), and our PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) showed us what true Coyote spirit looks like on Wednesday as they greeted students and families and reminded us of the many incredible experiences made possible through their support. From professional PE teachers and computer science instruction to Living Classroom and art docents, these programs enrich the educational experience for our students in so many meaningful ways!

As a quick reminder, next Friday is a minimum day! All students across all grade levels will be dismissed at 12:15 pm. Please plan accordingly, as this will make our parking lot much busier than usual.
Next Friday is also our first Walk or Wheel day! Please join the Covington Community in walking or wheeling to school. Information on Safe Routes to School can be found here!
We are super excited to host Walk or Wheel on the first Friday of every single month. WoW is a monthly event where students and families actively commute to campus to get some fresh-air exercise, reduce morning traffic, help the environment, and have fun starting the day together!
Our big kickoff is right around the corner on Friday, September 4th!

Volunteer Authorization Process: Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.
To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

Coming soon....Covington's Got Talent! It was such a big hit last year that we need to bring it back again! Covington's Got Talent is our school-wide talent show featuring the amazing talents of our Covington Coyotes. The show is open to any students at all grade levels interested in participating. Students will need to “audition” their act, commit to a couple of rehearsals, including the mandatory dress rehearsal before the big shows. There will be two shows, one for our Covington families and one for students only.
Covington's Got Talent in the Covington Multi
September 24th at 6:00 PM
September 25th at 1:00 PM (Students only)
A MANDATORY dress rehearsal for all performers will take place Friday, September 18, from 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Multi.
More details:
- Any student can participate. Students are allowed to be in ONE act - either as an individual or as part of a group. Each act is limited to 2 minutes maximum.
- The stage is not huge, so all group sizes should be a maximum of 10-12 students.
- Anything goes! Playing a musical instrument, magic tricks, singing, dancing, stand-up comedy, acrobatics, juggling, etc. However, students must spend their allotted time on stage doing something. A “talent” is not just standing there.
- Students will have access to use the sound system (for music), mic, piano, table, chairs, and stage lights. Any other props will need to be provided by the performer.
- This is not a competition but a showcase of our talented Covington Coyotes.
- “Auditions" are an opportunity for administration/staff/PTA Executive Board to review acts to ensure they are appropriate for Covington’s Got Talent. They have the right to provide feedback to student(s) and review again if needed to make sure all acts reflect our Coyote Way.

Become an Art Docent!
The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.
Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!

Do you like to connect kids with nature? Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option.
