Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

Welcome to another wonderful Friday! Our campus was full of energy this morning as we celebrated our first Walk-or-Wheel day of the year! Students were excited to ride the "blender bike" and show their school spirit with cheer, flags, and pom poms. Thank you to everyone who participated! Today, we were especially thrilled to welcome our kindergarteners to their very first Friday Assembly. They just wrapped up their first full week of full-day school, and we couldn't be prouder of how well they are adjusting. Next week, our TK students will take that same big step as they begin their full-day schedule! They had a fantastic first TK assembly on Thursday, where they got to read a story with me and meet our school coyote mascot.

Please note that we will not have a school-wide assembly this coming Tuesday morning, so our next gathering as a full school community will be next Friday.

I also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our first PTA general meeting this morning. I am so impressed by our extraordinary community participation and the incredible energy in the room. We have so many exciting events on the horizon, including our annual Talent Show and Walkathon, as well as several upcoming community dining events (our "Dine & Howls"). Be sure to check the Important Dates section of this newsletter so you don't miss out!
I am also excited to introduce our new afternoon parking lot attendant! Please welcome Kathy Arellanes, who will be helping our parking lot run smoothly and students cross safely!

I hope everyone has a wonderful 3-day weekend.

See you Tuesday!
Kate

Office Reminders

Parent Resources: Our school website includes many parent resources and is a great source of information! Please take a few moments to check it out if you haven't already! Here is the link!
Volunteer Authorization Process: Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

  • An overview of the three volunteer levels
  • Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
  • Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
  • Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

Shortcut via St Williams Church: If you happen to use the church car park as a shortcut to reach school, please do so with care and consideration for others in the area. There was a near miss with a student as a car rushed through to get to drop off.

The safety of our students and those in our community is of utmost importance.

Please drive carefully and considerately at all times.

A Note From PTA

Please join us for our first Dine & Howl of the year on Monday, September 14!

A Note From Art Docents

Become an Art Docent!

The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.

New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.

Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
