Happy Friday! Our 6th graders returned from science camp earlier this afternoon. They had an amazing week of hiking and team-building, and I am looking forward to hearing their stories next week! A huge thank you to our 5th graders for stepping up as school leaders this week and running the ball shed during recess and lunch. I am looking forward to attending the talent show dress rehearsal this afternoon. The family and school performances are next week!

Covington Opportunity to Support Blach’s Challenge Day. A Chance to Really Make an Impact with Students
In Blach’s continuing work to build a more inclusive and caring community, all Blach 8th graders will have the opportunity to participate in Challenge Day. Thanks to LAEF, Blach is able to provide this impactful experience for every 8th grader who wants to participate. Since Challenge Day is limited to 100 students, we will run two Challenge Days: Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th.
The Challenge Day program is approximately 6 hours long and takes place during a school day.
Challenge Day Leaders begin the morning by helping teens step out of their comfort zones through music and games. When the teenagers begin to feel safe in the group, they are then willing to be vulnerable with one another and connect as human beings and no longer from stereotypes and labels that have been placed upon them such as “nerds”, “jocks”, “popular”, etc. Leaders also spend a portion of the morning talking about the healthy expression of emotions, and the negative effects of keeping feelings inside. During the afternoon, participants dive into the issue of social oppression and examine the impact oppression has on their lives and the lives of people around them. By the end of the afternoon, participants have an opportunity to take a stand against oppression, make amends for hurts they have caused each other, and state their commitment to creating change on their campus and in their community. The day is both inspiring and awakening for students and adults.
Challenge Day is also a wonderful springboard for our 8th graders just prior to their weeklong trip to Yosemite. The bonds formed up in Yosemite are made even easier, and tighter, because of their Challenge Day experience.
Students are encouraged to share as little or as much as they want during Challenge Day. The level of participation is completely up to the student. Just being in the room is a powerful experience.
A critical component to Challenge day is a 4 students to 1 adult ratio. If you’re a parent who has been looking to get involved in helping our community grow in unity and caring, this is your chance! We would welcome community members who may not even have a child at Blach helping out as well. We need many adults to make this happen so we are asking for your help. We invite parents, other family members, or even members of the greater community to assist us on that day. New: Online Payments through PowerSchool: LASD families can now make online payments directly through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Families can conveniently pay school-related fees or make donations associated with an individual student, including field trips, assessed charges for lost or damaged materials, and more. Donations to PTA and LAEF should not be made through this portal, instead please click here here to donate to the PTA and here to donate to LAEF
When selecting the payment option in PowerSchool, families will be directed to our third-party payment provider, eFunds, and will need to create an account before making their first payment. Once an account is established, payments can be made by credit card or ACH/bank transfer with a small processing fee. Families who prefer to pay by check may continue to do so directly at their school.
This new online option simply gives families another convenient way to manage student-related payments securely, all in one place.
Logging into PowerSchool
To find the requests in the PowerSchool Parent Portal, you must log in with the email address you used when you registered your child in LASD. Please choose “forgot password” if you need assistance with your password. If you do not have access to the PowerSchool Parent Portal, contact powerschoolsupport@lasdschools.org for help.

Early Release Thursdays: This is a quick reminder that we have early release every Thursday. Dismissal times are as follows:
- TK - 1:30 pm
- Kinder 1:15 pm
- Grades 1-2 - 1:25 pm
- Grades 3-6 - 1:45 pm
Here is our weekly bell schedule. While the office remains open past dismissal, students are expected to be picked up on time, pending extenuating circumstances. Thank you for your support!
Parking Lot: Please be mindful of designated parking spots, including Auction Spots, during pick-up and drop-off. Auction spots are only for the designated auction winners. We also ask all families to drive carefully on and near campus. As a quick reminder, the District Office parking lot is not intended for Covington pick-up and drop-off. Please use our main lot, or alternative sites such as the church or Rosita Park.

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.
Growth Mindset Assemblies: We are excited to have Dr. Blake Brandes join our students on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, for a fun and engaging Growth Mindset presentation. Dr. Brandes is a TEDx speaker, America’s Got Talent contestant, and Marshall Scholar who has spoken to more than 500,000 students around the world. During the presentation, our students will learn valuable skills to help them overcome challenges and achieve their dreams!
Dr. Blake has written beautifully illustrated children's books to accompany his powerful message, and he is offering autographed copies to our students!

Become an Art Docent!
The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.
Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!

Do you like to connect kids with nature? Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option.
