Dear Covington Families,
One of the absolute highlights of my week has been learning more about the fantastic talent within the Covington community. Yesterday evening was the family talent show, and today was the school event! I was blown away by the confidence, enthusiasm, talent, and joy on stage over the past two days, and I am grateful for the peek into our students' passions and interests beyond the classroom.
Looking ahead to next week, there are a few important events to put on your calendar! Next Tuesday is picture day! Send your child ready with their brightest smile. Next Friday is also a busy day- our coyote mascot will join us at Friday assembly (first Friday of the month), and it is also a Walk or Wheel Day and Coffee with the Principal/General PTA Meeting. I hope to see you there!

Seeking Lunchtime Volunteers: We are looking forward to opening our STEM Lab for students at lunchtime on Mondays! We are looking for a few volunteers to help with lunchtime STEM. We are also hoping to add an additional lunch duty or two to help monitor students at the tables and playgrounds! Please complete this interest form if you are interested in learning more! |

New: Online Payments through PowerSchool: LASD families can now make online payments directly through the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Families can conveniently pay school-related fees or make donations associated with an individual student, including field trips, assessed charges for lost or damaged materials, and more. Donations to PTA and LAEF should not be made through this portal, instead please click here here to donate to the PTA and here to donate to LAEF
When selecting the payment option in PowerSchool, families will be directed to our third-party payment provider, eFunds, and will need to create an account before making their first payment. Once an account is established, payments can be made by credit card or ACH/bank transfer with a small processing fee. Families who prefer to pay by check may continue to do so directly at their school.
This new online option simply gives families another convenient way to manage student-related payments securely, all in one place.
Logging into PowerSchool
To find the requests in the PowerSchool Parent Portal, you must log in with the email address you used when you registered your child in LASD. Please choose “forgot password” if you need assistance with your password. If you do not have access to the PowerSchool Parent Portal, contact powerschoolsupport@lasdschools.org for help.

Volunteer Authorization Process:
- An overview of the three volunteer levels
- Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
- Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
- Links to all required forms and resources
To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.

Growth Mindset Assemblies: We are excited to have Dr. Blake Brandes join our students on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, for a fun and engaging Growth Mindset presentation. Dr. Brandes is a TEDx speaker, America’s Got Talent contestant, and Marshall Scholar who has spoken to more than 500,000 students around the world. During the presentation, our students will learn valuable skills to help them overcome challenges and achieve their dreams!
Dr. Blake has written beautifully illustrated children's books to accompany his powerful message, and he is offering autographed copies to our students!

Nurturing creativity in young artists
The LAEF-funded Art Docents program is underway for the 2026–27 school year, and students across the district are already deeply engaged in exploring art. In classrooms from TK through 6th grade, children are engaging with unique art forms, experimenting with materials, and creating original pieces.
These hands-on experiences are possible because families like you support LAEF. Donations to LAEF fund the Art Docents program, along with other specialized teachers, staff, and instructional materials that public funding alone does not cover. Huge thanks to the families who have already donated. If you have not yet made your 2026–27 gift, please consider doing so now during our Fall Fundraising Campaign. Become an Art Docent!
The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.
Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!

Do you like to connect kids with nature? Living Classroom is seeking volunteers to teach our fun nature-based lessons and help care for our school gardens. No experience necessary as we teach you everything you need to know. Please join us from 9:30am-12:30pm on Mondays 8/31-10/19* at the LASD iLearn Studio to train to become a volunteer docent (*no training on 9/7 - Labor Day). If Mondays don't work for you, please ask about our apprentice-style training option.
