Dear Covington Families,
Happy Thursday! As a quick reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow. I hope you enjoy the three-day weekend and get some good time together, whether that's a trip, a lazy morning, or just a break from the usual rush!
The school won't be empty, though. Our staff will be here for a full day of learning. Our TK team will be digging into systematic phonics instruction with IMSE, K-5 teachers will keep exploring Bridges (our newly adopted math program), and our 6th grade teachers will work alongside colleagues from the middle schools, since 6th grade is expected to move over for the 2028-29 school year.
It is important work that has a direct impact on your students' school experience!
We can't wait to welcome students back on Monday. As a quick reminder ahead of the new week, we ask students and families who use campus before and after school to please be mindful of picking up their own trash (same as within the school day). We have noticed an uptick in trash left during these times, and we want all students to be able to start the day on a clean campus! Our office and custodial staff appreciate your help!
As you receive your classroom newsletters in the upcoming weeks, please keep an eye out for conference sign-ups! Your child's teacher will be reaching out soon about student conferences, which will take place between October and November. Keep an eye on your inbox!

This month, our Character Strong trait is Responsibility. We define it as taking action and understanding the impact of our choices. Sometimes that means doing the right thing or finishing a task we've been given. It also means recognizing that our actions matter: responsible choices can help the people around us, and irresponsible ones can hurt them.
Responsibility is one of three traits we will focus on this year to help students Be Strong. In every grade, students will be building skills like focusing, organizing, and goal-setting.
You can support this learning at home with a few simple ideas:
-
Lend a hand. Look for a way your family can make a neighbor's or friend's day a little easier, such as taking out their garbage bins, carrying in groceries, or inviting them over for a meal.
-
Share the work. Pick a household chore with several steps, like washing dishes or tidying the living room, and have each family member take one step. See who can be the quickest or most effective!
-
Start a conversation. Ask your child, "What does it mean to be responsible?" and "How can we help each other practice being more responsible?"
Thank you for partnering with us as we help our students grow into strong, caring members of our community.

The Los Altos School District is holding a book drive, and we’d love your help putting more books into the hands of children, families, and readers in our community!
We’re collecting new or gently used books for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Please drop off your donations at the Covington Main Office, open 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, any time between October 5th and 16th.
Clear out a shelf, share a favorite story, and help a young reader discover theirs. Thank you for your generosity!

Become an Art Docent!
The Art Docent training program gives new volunteers everything they need to feel confident bringing art into the classroom. Trainees explore all the art mediums we teach while learning classroom management skills, how to lead engaging discussions, and how to give effective demonstrations.
New Docent Training takes place on Thursday mornings from 8:45–11:30 a.m. starting September 3rd and includes technique, art content, and general program topics. Once training begins, new docents gradually gain classroom experience—assisting in September, co-leading in November and December, and moving into assisting, co-leading, and leading lessons from January through May.
Join us! It’s a wonderful way to learn something new, share your creativity, and make a lasting impact on our students!
