Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

Yesterday, our school participated in the Great California ShakeOut! Classes practiced “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” before quietly evacuating to the blacktop. Students and staff did a wonderful job following procedures as we accounted for everyone on campus and practiced our emergency response roles. Emergency preparedness is an important part of keeping our community safe, and I encourage you to visit the Great ShakeOut website to learn more and talk with your children about what to do during an earthquake at home and in other settings.

This is also a great time to remind families to check their PowerSchool emergency contacts and update them if needed! In the event of a real earthquake or emergency requiring families to pick up students, we will have a reunification process. Parents will need to:
  • Have your picture ID with you - even if the front office knows you, they are required to see an ID to release your child
  • Parents will check in near the main office for ID verification and a student dismissal slip before going to the reunification station by the servery.  Families may not access their children without checking in and will be redirected if they use other entrances to campus.
  • Students will be walked to the reunification station by staff. Please do not approach the student assembly area.

Unity Day: Join us in going orange for Unity Day! Unity Day is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in 2011. It brings students, families, and communities across the country together to send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

The call to action is simple: wear and share orange! Orange is a warm, vibrant color associated with safety and visibility, and wearing it shows every child that they are not alone. Students can wear an orange shirt, socks, shoelaces, a wristband, or any orange accessory.

At Covington, our Leadership students have been promoting Unity Day across campus and delivering flyers to classrooms. Teachers will also lead activities like a class kindness pledge, compliment circles, and a kindness chain, so students can practice what unity looks like.

Stepping into Kindness Shoe Drive
Help us put kindness into action! In honor of Unity Day, our Leadership students are hosting the Stepping into Kindness shoe drive next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. We’re collecting gently used shoes of all sizes to help those in need. Every student who donates a pair will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a small prize. Clean out those closets and help us step up for our community!
Upcoming Math Competitions: For over 25 years, Math Kangaroo has organized an annual international mathematical competition for thousands of students in grades 1-12. Math Kangaroo's focus is on improving students' math interest and teaching them new strategies for solving word and logic problems, helping them with critical thinking and gaining confidence in the classroom.

This year, the test will take place on Thursday, March 18, 2027 2:15 PM - 3:30 PM PT at Covington Elementary school.

Our school center is private- open for LASD Elementary students only, if you are interested in registering please reach out to janki360@gmail.com to get the private center registration code.

Please register to Math Kangaroo Competition at the following site:

In addition to hosting Math Kangaroo, Covington will also host the AMC8 in January! Registration information for the AMC8 will appear in the Howler in the first week of November. In the meantime, you can learn more about the AMC8 HERE!
Have a great weekend,
Kate
