Message from the Principal

Dear Covington Families,

It has been a great week at Covington! Last Saturday’s Walkathon was fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so many of our families out running laps and showing their support for the school. A huge thank-you to the parent volunteers who organized the event and gave their time on the day itself. We couldn’t do this without our amazing community!

On Wednesday, we celebrated Unity Day. Many students wore orange to show their commitment to kindness and to standing up against bullying. Thank you to our student leadership team for organizing the shoe drive- it was an impactful way to put kindness into action.

Wednesday also brought a special assembly with Dr. Blake Brandes, who spoke with students about the power of “yet,” the importance of a growth mindset, and being kind to themselves and others. His message tied in perfectly with our Unity Day theme.

Also, a huge thank you to our PTA for the staff appreciation luncheon yesterday. Our staff loved the soups and sandwiches, and it was a special treat on our first rainy day of the year!

Today, students showcased their T1 STEM Activities (Mini Golf Courses) at lunchtime! Thank you to Acorn and Sunshine for organizing the event and to all the parents who showed up!

Teachers are in the process of scheduling parent-teacher conferences, so please watch for details from your child’s teacher. The first trimester ends next Friday, which is also the day of our Halloween parade! Join us at 2:00 pm on the blacktop to see the costumes.

Parents, you will notice that the PTA section of the Howler has moved. Moving forward, you will get PTA-specific information directly from the PTA through Classroom Parent. The PTA newsletter will be sent on Mondays!
Upcoming Math Opportunities:
  • Family Math Night: Covington is hosting Family Math Night in partnership with Mathnasium on the evening of Wednesday, November 4th. Join us for an evening of fun math games! We are looking for some 5th and 6th grade student volunteers- please sign up your student to volunteer here!
  • Math Kangaroo: For over 25 years, Math Kangaroo has organized an annual international mathematical competition for thousands of students in grades 1-12. Math Kangaroo's focus is on improving students' math interest and teaching them new strategies for solving word and logic problems, helping them with critical thinking and gaining confidence in the classroom. This year, the test will take place on Thursday, March 18, 2027 2:15 PM - 3:30 PM PT at Covington Elementary school. Our school center is private- open for LASD Elementary students only, if you are interested in registering please reach out to janki360@gmail.com to get the private center registration code. Please register to Math Kangaroo Competition at the following site: MATH KANGAROO REGISTRATION PAGE
  • AMC8: Covington is hosting the AMC8 in January! Registration information for the AMC8 will appear in the Howler in the first week of November. In the meantime, you can learn more about the AMC8 HERE!
