Dear Covington Families,
What a wonderful week at our school! Thank you to our entire community for making Family Math Night on Wednesday evening such a success. A huge thank-you to our PTA for organizing the event, to the students and parents who volunteered their time, and to all the families who showed up to learn, play, and explore math together. Your energy and enthusiasm made the night truly special!
Earlier this week, our TK students gathered for the November TK Assembly, where we read the story The Friend Ship. Today, we held our regular Friday Assembly as well. Today was also a Walk or Wheel Day, and we loved seeing so many students arriving on foot, on bikes, and on scooters! As a reminder, the first Friday of every month is a Walk or Wheel Day, so mark your calendars and join in the fun.
Next Friday, we will hold a very special celebration at our assembly as we recognize students who have been reclassified as RFEP (Redesignated Fluent English Proficient). This celebration honors students who are graduating from our English Learner Program and are now officially multilingual, proficient in English and their home language (and in some cases, even more languages!). This is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are so proud and excited to share this moment with our community.
If your child is among those being reclassified, please be sure to join us at our Friday Assembly at 8:30 AM. We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Trait of the Month- Gratitude: This month, our school is focusing on Gratitude, which we think of as “choosing to appreciate the people and things in our lives.” Practicing gratitude can boost our well-being and even our happiness! Gratitude is one of three traits we focus on throughout the year to help students Be Well, and across all grade levels, students are building skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress management.
Here are two ways to practice at home:
- Think small: As a family, come up with at least 10 small, specific things you’re grateful for, like a favorite water cup or Grandma’s banana bread, and notice them this week with a smile.
- Start a gratitude jar: Set out a glass jar and slips of paper, and add special people, places, and memories each week. On a gloomy day, read the slips aloud together as a reminder of your grateful moments.
Conversation starters: Can you share or show what it means to practice gratitude? What is something you are grateful for every day?

Whether you have an hour or a day, we need volunteers to make Illuminate happen!
Illuminate LASD: What happens when students lead their own learning and dive deeply into a question that matters to them, and share their voices in powerful ways? Illuminate LASD invites students to become experts, innovators, and change-makers. Whether it’s researching a topic they’re passionate about, solving a problem that inspires them, or creating something to make an impact, students will share the artifacts that highlight the learning process. From TK to 8th grade, Illuminate LASD invites students to share what they now know and can do by sharing the process and products of their learning.
